How do you know what you don’t know? - Issue #7

I enjoyed a break last week as it was half term. I hope you have just had a break / are currently on holiday / about to start a week or so off. I spent some really enjoyable time with my family, caught up on a few jobs and projects, and led an IB workshop for InThinking.

Timeline JS
Timeline JS as been on my list of things to look at for ages - I was basically waiting for some lesson content that it could be meaningfully applied to. The service creates a timeline from a Google Sheet. You can add images, categories etc. The finished timeline can be linked to or embedded in a website.
The lesson I incorporated it into is on ‘International conflict over water resources’ and uses the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam as a focus. You can see the timeline here (version 1 - needs a little more polish). The IB DP Geography lesson that it is a part of is here (apologies - geographyalltheway subscription required).

How is The Coca Cola Company moving from a linear to a circular economy? | The Circular Economy Show
It should be quite clear by now that I like a good podcast! This one from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation is worth a listen. When discussing the circular economy with my students I find it difficult to give really concrete examples - and probably overuse MUD Jeans! This interview with Bea Perez, Senior Vice President and Chief Communications, Sustainability and Strategic Partnerships Officer at Coca-cola tackles what such a large company is doing to transition towards a more circular economy model. When you work at such a large scale even tiny changes can have a massive impact.

I am a keen photographer. Mainly digital photography but I do also have a number of ‘old’ film cameras that I really enjoy using. It would seem that I tend to favour landscape and street style photography. richardallaway.photos is a little project I am working on. I am trying to have a more intentional approach to my photography this year - working towards a series of images that feel like they should be together. I also post most of my images on Instagram but this site is more about seeing images as a series.
Random
Lucidpress, in their literature, describe themselves as a brand templating platform. This is a bit of a disservice for what is an excellent online service for the creation of worksheets, posters, and similar resources. I use it to generate most of the printable resources on geographyalltheway.com. Every student and educator also has access to the service at my school.
Here are a couple of examples of what can be created using the platform →
It's always great to read nice things

How do you know what you don’t know? is about spreading some of the things that I am finding useful and sharing it in an easily accessible and digestible way.

The first item will be for all geographers based on bigger ideas and everyday geographies. The idea behind the second item is something that is more focused on the needs of IB DP geographers, educators and students. The item will be linked to the syllabus but other geography educators and students may find it useful too. The third section is a quick update on something I am working on. New content added to, or refreshed on geographyalltheway, something I have recently written, or am involved in. The fourth and final item will be a bit more random. It will be a recommendation. Probably a bit techie, an app, an online service, or similar.

The ‘How do you know what you don’t know?’ newsletter is free, and isn’t (just) for geographyalltheway subscribers. I will try to keep the links to content behind the geographyalltheway.com paywall to an absolute minimum!
